a remarkable scene in louisiana caught on camera, everything vanishing in 30 seconds but what caused it and could it happen near you. here's abc's matt gutman tonight. >> reporter: this is not an optical illusion. a stand of trees seemly melting into this swamp in louisiana is being swallowed into a massive sink hole, sucking everything down with it. watch those trees again dipping slowly at first and then quickly vanishing into the hole. scientists say it's more than a football field deep. it's near an old salt mine. workers were using water to dissolve and pump out the salt deep underground and eventually pumped out enough to make the ground give way. now the earth slowly moves into the cavern causing growing sink holes above. >> it's going to continue to grow until it finds a point where it can support itself. >> reporter: the sink hole appeared a year ago. 150 households were evacuated and the state is suing the company that mined the salt. sink holes are common and often occur naturally. this one in downtown guatemala city bore a hole big enough to swallow the statue of liberty.

to the new one. >>james:a hostage situation in rural louisiana lasts nearly twelve hours before police were forced to end it. two hostages were shot as police stormed a bank in northeastern louisiana. they had set a midnight deadline after they say negotiations were no longer possible. authorities say the suspect, 20-year-old fuaed abdo ahmed, never intended to rob the bank -- rather, he was trying to make a statement. one hostage was released last night, but hours later, ahmed shot two of them. one of the hostages died. police shot and killed ahmed. a bus driver is speaking out after being shot by a passenger in seattle. 64-year-old deloy dupuis says he feels good to be alive. this is just a day after he was shot in the cheek and arm. here's video of the scene. police chased and fatally shot the gunman after he ran onto another bus. police say the gunfire began after dupuis asked three people to pay the bus fare. two of the passengers paid, and the third shot the driver twice before running away. >>james:a u-s -based rail company whose runaway oil train caused a fire and explosion that kil

[ sirens ] >> reporter: the deadly standoff began around noon tuesday. when authorities say a gunman armed with a rifle and handgun, took three people hostage at this st. joseph's bank in rural northeast louisiana. >> we still been able to talk to him. they've asked for some food and provisions. >> reporter: law enforcement agencies were called in to assist with negotiations that dragged on for nearly 12 hours. but officials pledged to do whatever was necessary. >> the teams we have can be in place for a long period. we're going to be here as long as it takes. >> reporter: a female hostage was released later in the day. but police tell cbs news that around midnight s.w.a.t. teams were forced to kill the gunman after he shot the two remaining victims. apparently because his demands weren't met. >> fuad abdo ahmed was the perpetrator's name. he is deceased at the
